World Cup fever - are you prepared as an employer?

Kick off of the World Cup will soon be here, taking place in Brazil between Thursday 12 June 2014 and Sunday 13 July 2014. The England games take place between 5pm and 11pm (UK time), Brazil is four hours behind the UK. England is the only UK country to qualify but, other games may be of interest to your workforce.

No doubt employers are likely to face requests for time off and flexible working, not to mention there may be sore heads in the morning.   Work places are different but with flexibility and imagination to navigate through the month of wall-to-wall football, if things are handled correctly there is no reason why your business should suffer.  Ansa HR give some quick pointers for you to consider:

  • Depending on how your workforce is made up, it may not be just the England matches that are likely to be popular so check out the schedule of the group and knock-out stages.
  • Bring yourself up-to-date with your sickness absence and flexible working policies as well as any rules about annual leave.  It may also be an idea to refresh any guidance you have about working under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Consider allowing staff to watch key matches at work but on the basis that time is made up later, or start or finish times adjusted.  It’s probably helpful that no matches kick off before 5pm, though there are some late starts in the group stages, e.g. England’s opener against Italy.
  • Be fair with football fans and football-phobia staff, whatever their gender or nationality.
