10 reasons why you need a stylist

10 reasons why you need a stylist

What stops you from engaging a personal stylist? Perhaps you think they’re a luxury preserved for the famous? Or perhaps you’re just not sure how they’ll add value to your life or have never really considered how useful they would be as part of your team?

Working quietly behind the scenes on your behalf, a personal stylist can in fact be a game changer when it comes to a number of different area of your life. So, in this post, I’ve shared just 10 ways a stylist will make your life better.

1. Brand “you” and consistency

Anyone who has ever been involved in any marketing or PR exercise will know the importance of “branding”. Branding is complex and is about delivering a message, illustrating your values, establishing credibility, connecting emotionally with people and building loyalty.

In 2021, personal branding is more important than ever, whether it’s in terms of developing your reputation in your chosen career or business, positioning yourself as an expert or standing out in your social circles.Personal branding is about you as an individual creating a consistent image that speaks of you and your values, but also connects with the people you want to engage with, conveying the right message.

A personal stylist will work with you to help you identify your “brand” or personal style. This involves choosing the colours that suit you and bring out the best in you, but also that represent the right values and will appeal to the people around you. It also involves nailing your style, whether that’s by always wearing a signature scarf, the cut of your suit or the type of blouse that you go for. And it also means making sure you show up “on brand” consistently, every single day, so that with one quick glance, people know it’s you and recognise all that you stand for.

2. First impressions

Incredibly, we start to form a first impression of someone within one-tenth of a second of seeing their face! And in the first few seconds of a meeting, we start to decide whether the person is attractive, trustworthy, competent, extroverted, dominant and more.

Scientific research has found that overall, first impressions are most influenced by nonverbal communication and factors. Facial cues and body language are important indetermining first impressions and these in turn will depend on your level of confidence. But clothing, hairstyles, style, etc. all weigh into the balance.

The assumptions we make as part of a first impression are often long lasting. Cue your personal branding. With the aid of your personal stylist, you’ll be showing up on brand every time, always creating the right first impression.

3. Confidence and non-verbal communication

As mentioned above, positive facial expressions and body language also form part of what creates a great first impression and the ability to be able to achieve these comes down to a great extent to personal confidence. In other words, when you know you look great, you feel great and you exude that confidence and positivity via your facial expressions, posture and gestures. This is all part of the work of a personal stylist and the impact you create will last long after those first impressions.
4. Online clarity
Like it or not, as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic, a lot of what we do has moved online, from business presentations and job interviews to friendly get togethers. But far from meaning that you can show up to these events in your pyjamas, it’s actually super important to tune in looking your absolute best.

Your listeners will probably only be able to see your top half. If you’re wearing a massive necklace, the wrong colour scarf, an ill-fitting shirt, these flaws will get much more focus and attention than if you had been standing on a stage or in a boardroom at a remote distance from your audience.

The result is that these features risk becoming a distraction and can undermine the impression you want to create. Knowing what is going to work well (or not) online isn’t always easy but with the help of a personal stylist, you’ll always know exactly what to wear to keep your audience fully focussed on you, and not the missing button on your shirt.

5. Declutter wardrobe

Ever find yourself staring at a wardrobe that is full to bursting but with nothing suitable to wear? Do you have trouble letting go of certain items (I’ll wear that again syndrome)? Or do you find that none of your outfits seem to work well together?

Your personal stylist will help you declutter your wardrobe, working with you to get rid of those items that may have suited you 10 years ago butdon’t represent who you are anymore. Your stylist will help you pick out those key items which work well together, bring out your best and are in line withyour current style. The result is you’ll have more space in your wardrobe and you’ll be getting lots of wear out of those items you keep.

6. On trend

On trend isn’t necessarily about having the very latest catwalk cut! It’s about making sure your clothes always look modern and stylish. A personal stylist understands the latest fashionsand also how they can be adapted to create a wardrobe that is inspired by the latest looks but is still practical, comfortable and in line with your personal style. Experimenting with style and updating your look is great but not when you get it wrong. A personal stylish ensures you move with the times, but never make costly fashion blunders.

7. Bring out the best

Little changes often make the biggest difference. It might be that just changing a certain colour lightens and lifts your skin tone. Sometimes, just by wearing a different cut, we look significantly slimmer, or by changing how we wear something, we can shed 10 years. And who doesn’t want that? But without a personal stylist, these changes can be both hard to identify and harder still to make. You may be stuck in a rut (I’ve always worn this style shirt) or just not have the confidence and know-how of how to make those small tweaks and changes that will transform your look and give you a confidence boost.

8. Always have the perfect outfit

Imagine always being able to throw on the perfect outfit, wherever you are in the world and whatever you’re doing.  No packing faux pas, no agonies in front of the mirror trying to decide if this “works”. Just effortless style and a wardrobe full of outfits that you can mix and match, colours that you love In short, imagine always feeling a million dollars whether you’re presenting to the team or relaxing with friends. Once again, this is the work of your personal stylist, who will help you with buying choices and transform your wardrobe so that looking your best is easy.

9. Save time

Time is the one precious commodity that most of us wish we had more of. It’s the one thing that allows us to get more done each day but also enables us to achieve more of a work / life balance. And by now, you may have worked out that a personal stylist can also save you a significant amount of time. Time saved on rummaging through your wardrobe trying to find something to wear, time saved on trying different outfits, time saved shopping. And that’s time well spent.

10. Save money

If you’re thinking that a personal stylist is a luxury you cannot justify, then think again because a stylist is likely to save you money in a number of ways. From avoiding wasting money on fashion fails, to making the clothes that you already have work harder and better for you, far from increasing your wardrobe spend, you'll probably find you end up spending less! With the help of a stylist, a few key items of clothing and accessories can form the basis of multiple stylish outfits …all on trend and on brand!
