Almost a decade ago, the
boss from hell changed the trajectory of my life.
Many of you know that it took me almost a decade to open up and go public about my story. I never realised that over the years it was building up to be trauma. But, it got to me where I am today. I’m far from where I want to be. But the lessons and knowledge I gained weighs heavier than the trauma.
The boss from hell bullied me in an unfortunate miscarriage, and continually harassed me when I inevitably resigned. Im sure I can find the WhatsApp messages and the emails to all of my email addresses if I looked.
I was ridiculed, forced to come back into work, and was spoken to harshly and with utter disrespect as I spent some days trying to recover.
Funnily enough, an ex employee of the business heard about my story. It turns out that the same boss did the very same thing to her just years before. Her story was almost identical. She was suffering an unfortunate miscarriage and this boss bullied her about her time out of work, bullied her into work, provided no support, and made her feel worthless and threatened her to the point that she would lose her job.
I was doing really well in my career and always held influential positions. But, my background didn’t prevent me from going through this experience of discrimination and harassment. I was always doing a bit of HR in every role but never thought to embark upon an entire HR career. But things how a HR career found me. So if I was in a reputable position, why did this happen to me?
It’s because of this: Managers and business leaders sometimes fail to follow the processes and strategies that HR put into place because they simply don’t understand why we do it. I also think it’s because I was always meant to be a HR and employment law consultant.
I had a choice, and I chose to continue my career with the purpose of training and supporting managers and other professionals into understanding the critical functionalities of what it means to be a manager or to look after a workforce.
I incorporate a lot of leadership strategies into a HR strategy I implement for my clients. But also have clients who have specifically enrolled into my leadership programs. I can feel the difference that I’m making. And I won’t stop.
What’s the purpose? I truly believe that business leaders/managers don’t know enough about handling people, and due to other factors in business behave these erratic ways. Now I’m not making excuses for the bad eggs. I’m saying I have the ability to change the perceptions and behaviours of the bad eggs and those who are keen to do better. So, if you want to enroll onto my psychology and science backed leadership program then do send me a message.
