Writers are a valuable resource to businesses, and when you find a good one you need to guard them with your live.
Seriously, you do! Hiring a professional writer can have a huge positive impact on your business.
Whilst nobody knows your business like you do, not everybody can write content that will make people feel like they have a connection with your brand. Writing is a skill and to get the most out of any marketing campaign, involving a writer is critical.
But first of all, you need to know what type of writer you need to hire.
Terms like blogger, copywriter and content writer are thrown around but what do they mean and which one do you need for your business.
Blogger
A blogger is somebody who writes blog posts for their own blog or community blog sites. Bloggers tend to focus on a specific niche. For instance fashion, food, lifestyle etc.
A blogger will be highly knowledgeable about their chosen area and will be up to speed with all the latest and on-trend topics.
Can a business hire a blogger?
Yes, and many do. You can hire a professional blogger to write content for your blog or to blog about your product on their own blog site. As mentioned above, many bloggers operate within a specific niche. If you are looking to hire a blogger, seek out someone who is skilled in this area by searching social media to see who is blogging on that topic and who has a large following.
Copywriter
A copywriter is like a skilled salesperson but in written form.
In the past copywriter’s traditionally worked for advertising agencies writing content that would persuade consumers to buy a product. Copywriters have come out of the advertising agencies and now have a place with supporting marketing campaigns.
If you are looking to create a landing page, Facebook ad or email campaign that will convert the reader into a buyer, you need to hire a copywriter.
Content writer
Content writing is a relatively new term and many writers now associate more with this term than copywriting.
A content writer is a storyteller. They can take a relatively small amount of information and create a detailed blog post or an article for an online magazine, for example. Content writers mainly create content that is to be used online and need to have an in-depth knowledge of SEO writing.
The main difference between a copywriter and a content writer is that a content writer isn’t trying to sell anything they are creating content that is designed to educate or inform the reader. There is no push to buy a product or service.
Many freelance writers cover both copywriting and content writing. Before you hire a writer, ask about their experiences in these areas and ask to see samples of their work. You can see samples of my work, here.
