I went to the circus yesterday and found myself having multiple moments where I thought: "How is the human body and mind even capable of that?"
The acrobats were incredible. The strength, flexibility and precision on display were impressive enough but quite quickly I found myself thinking about what sat behind the performance...
Resilience.
Discipline.
Self-awareness.
Trust.
Hours and hours of practice that the audience never sees.
The finale was particularly memorable. Four motorbikes raced at speed inside a steel globe while another rider launched above it through the crowd. Even writing about it now gives me goosebumps.
The level of trust required for that performance is just - wow.
Every performer depended on others doing exactly what they were supposed to do, at exactly the right time. There was no room for assumptions, poor communication or cutting corners.
As someone who spends much of my time working with leaders, teams and organisations, I was slightly amused by how naturally my brain connected the experience back to workplace culture.
It made me realise just how much this work has become part of who I am.
While others were understandably focused on the stunts, I found myself thinking about what enables people to perform at their best consistently.
In workplaces, we often celebrate outcomes.
We recognise the successful project, the promotion, the sales target achieved, the high-performing team, or the exceptional leader.
What we see less often are the foundations that make those outcomes possible.
The difficult conversations.
The feedback that was given and received.
The trust built over months or years.
The resilience required to keep going after setbacks.
The psychological safety that allows people to take risks.
The underrated leadership qualities of self-awareness, curiosity and courage to understand strengths, limitations and the impact we have on others.
Just as no acrobat walks into a circus ring and performs a complex routine without preparation, very few high-performing teams achieve success without investing in the conditions that allow people to thrive.
The organisations I see creating the most sustainable success are rarely the ones demanding more from their people.
They are the ones creating environments where people can perform, learn, recover, collaborate and grow.
Because high performance is not simply about talent but about creating the right conditions for talent to flourish - and those right conditions are rooted in psychological safety and trust.
And sometimes, those reminders appear in the most unexpected places.
