Not sure whether your website needs a refresh or a redesign?

It's a question that comes up surprisingly often, and for good reason. The terminology is genuinely confusing. Both involve change. Both improve things. But they're different decisions.

A refresh updates what's there – typography, colour, photography, the visual layer. The structure stays. It's the right move when the foundations are sound but the site has lost its edge.

A redesign goes deeper. Structure, user experience, how the site actually functions – all of it reviewed with fresh eyes. It's the right move when the site has grown in ways the original build didn’t anticipate.

I recently worked with a client who initially thought she needed a refresh. Once we talked through the difference, it became obvious that what she actually needed was a redesign.

Her site had expanded over time, and the original structure was no longer serving it. We kept the feel – she'd built something she was attached to, and rightly so. But we stripped it back, rebuilt the architecture, improved load time, and simplified the backend so she could manage it herself without thinking twice.

Same site. Different foundations. Much easier to live with.
