CryptoLocker Mayhem - Your Money or your Files

CryptoLocker Mayhem - Your Money or your Files

We've had a number of calls in the past week to computers that have become infected with a new virus that's doing the rounds. Called CryptoLocker, it is much more widespread and destructive than anything I've come across in the past.

Once your computer is infected the virus works silently in the background to encrypt your files (Word, Excel, JPG, PDF are all targets) using a randomly generated password. Once the files are encrypted you're presented with a 'ransom' message, demanding you pay $300US to regain access to the files.

That's the summary, if you want to read more about it click here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/cryptolocker-ransomware-information

I don't normally send out warning messages, but I've seen first hand the damage Cryptolocker can do. In one case it has destroyed over 10,000 files and 5 years of a companies financial information in one morning. They had no backup or AV protection.

-   You can prevent infection by running good, free antivirus software such as Microsoft Security essentials: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download.
-   Ensure your antivirus software is kept up to date and do a regular scan of your computer.
-   Don't open email attachments if you don't know the sender and you are not expecting the file. Of the Cryptolocker infections I have seen so far, both arrived via spam email. One from 'FedEx' and one from 'HMRC'.
-   Finally, and most importantly: Always have a backup of your important files.

As of the time of writing there is no known way to decrypt them without paying the ransom.

If you need any help checking your AV / Backup is up to date please get in touch. graham@tektoo.net 01282 572000
