Fleet & on-board experience
Hurtigruten have a proud heritage dating back to 1893. They have a fleet of highly manoeuvrable ships which can visit the larger ports of call as well as being able to nip into tiny charming ports that larger ships can't reach. Their focus is to offer off-the-beaten-path ports, steering clear of tourist traps with the ships carrying only a few hundred passengers at most. There's a a relaxing ambience on board giving you chance to soak up natures wonders, it's almost humbling to be swept away from our digital lives to the full glory of the outskirts of our world. You won't find casinos or cabaret shows here, but you will find like-minded wanderers, scenery at it's finest, and opportunity to recharge your soul as well as stoking your passion for travel.
There are 2 fleet types - Coastal & Explorer.
Coastal offers 12 ships, visiting 34 ports on the Norwegian coast. Taking in 1200 nautical miles of Norway's coastline, crossing the arctic circle to the Russian border
Explorer offers 4 ships with 2 more in production. These explore Norway at some times of the year and at other times visiting the Polar regions and the high Arctic
All ships have comfortable Scandinavian designed inside & outside cabins. A select number of suites are also available, however these are in high-demand so I'd encourage you to book early if you'd like to consider one of these.
The onboard crew and expedition teams are eager to share their knowledge of your destinations, they certainly know the best spots. If you like you can join them ashore for hikes these are are pre-sold on board as individual excursions or as part of a package.
For the younger generation some sailings have a 'Young explorers' programme for children ages 7-13. It's great for families that want a travel experience to remember. There is a dedicated on-board host who plans and organises age-appropriate activities.
Giving back
Hurtigruten are on a mission to care for our environment. They do this in a number of ways, such as trading locally for food & excursions from local suppliers. This contributes to the locals livelihood and welfare, and in return guests are welcomed with open arms.
All single-use plastic has been banned on board and they also use a Special Distillate Marine which has 30 times lower sulphur emissions and less soot. They have created the world's first hybrid expedition ship, reducing CO2 emissions and noise reduction. In addition they are working with Rolls Royce to retrofit 9 ships to run on LNG (Liquid Natural Gas), fossil-free renewable fuel produced from dead fish and battery power. When ashore, for those that would like to participate, guests are invited to join crew in voluntary beach cleanups along the Norwegian Coast and Svalbard.
Destinations
Roots are firmly placed in Norway & the fjords, so it's not surprising a number of their sailings take in this remarkable region. With their nimble ships it means they can reach ports the larger ships are unable to. They also sail to other off the beaten track destinations such as Svalbard, Greenland, Alaska, North & South America, Iceland, Russia, Antarctica. One of their most popular cruises - and a great starting itinerary if this is your first time experiencing a trip like this - is to see the Northern Lights. The beautiful Aurora Borealis is Mother Nature’s ultimate light show and there is even have a Northern Lights Promise - please message me directly to find out more.
Choosing your Fare
There are 3 fare types to choose from depending on your preferences and I'll explain each one fully prior to your reservation being made. Choose from Basic, Select or Platinum. There are some sailings which have no single supplements and early booking incentives are usually available.
Summary
Having visited the Norwegian fjords myself I have first hand knowledge of how incredibly stunning this area is. My visit ignited my fire to see other parts of the world that are away from my usual beach scene holiday. I visited the fjords in the early Autumn with crisp sharp mornings, full of orange and reds in the natural scene surrounding me. I'm longing to see Norway in the spring or summer to see how the landscape changes from one season to the next.
As part of this training I've heard from Hurtigruten's head of sales, who's impressed upon me how passionate all the team are to showcase this beautiful world of ours. The crew are committed to looking after guests and are on hand to help you create once in a life time experiences, maximising every moment of your awaited adventure.
The itineraries offered are so much more than a cruise. In the English language, the words 'adventure' 'expedition' and 'voyage' are probably the closest I can get to how Hurtigruten make me feel about their offering. All of this is firmly wrapped in their never failing love and care for their guests, local suppliers and the destinations you experience together.
Join me next week to delve deeper into expedition cruises to the Polar Regions, uncovering adventures to the ends of the Earth.
