One of my favourite books of last year was the Happiness Curve by J Rauch. This talks about how we are pre-disposed to become happier and more satisfied with life as we approach mid-life. Happiness slips in our 30s and 40s but starts to turn up as we approach our 50s and our values and expectations change. Reading this, having just turned 50, was quite a boost following a fairly unsettled period of my life.
Reflecting back since my milestone birthday last year, this has been one of the best 12 months for many years – lots of new clients, meeting lots of new, fabulous people at Henley Business School and generally feeling more settled in my working life. I’m not sure if this is a coincident or the fact that neurologically the more we are primed to look out for things the more we notice them. Did reading about how our increasing propensity to be happy post mid life, prime me to start looking out for opportunities to be happy once I reached this point?
So I now approach my next birthday with excitement as the happiness curve continues on its upward trajectory…that is until around 80 years!
