I Wrote Myself Out of 4 Jobs—And Back Into My Life

I Wrote Myself Out of 4 Jobs—And Back Into…

Burnout doesn’t knock politely. It crashes in uninvited, slowly at first—then all at once. For me, it wasn’t just the sleepless nights or emotional exhaustion. It was the quiet, creeping loss of self.

I’ve navigated four redundancies throughout my career. Not one was imposed. I chose to write myself out of roles—each time building, restructuring, or transforming a function, only to realize I was no longer needed in the new design. It was a strange kind of success, and a lonely one. Each exit came with applause, handshakes, and a familiar, haunting question: “What now?”

On paper, I was thriving. But inside, I was running on fumes. The cycle of reinvention and overachievement had become my identity. Until one day, it simply wasn’t sustainable. I hit burnout. And this time, I couldn’t think or work my way out of it.

The Turning Point

It took stillness to see clearly. For the first time in years, I stopped chasing the next thing and started asking deeper questions:

  • Who am I without the job title?

  • What truly matters to me?

  • What’s the cost of saying yes to everything—and everyone?

That’s when coaching entered my life—not just as a profession, but as a lifeline. Through it, I discovered what had been missing: purpose, boundaries, and the mental fitness to sustain both.

Purpose: Reconnecting with What Matters

Purpose isn’t a lofty mission statement—it’s the fuel that drives us when things get hard. I had spent years climbing, building, delivering, impressing. But I had lost touch with the why. Coaching helped me reconnect with what lit me up: developing people, fostering growth, and creating spaces where authenticity and courage can thrive.

Boundaries: Saying Yes to Myself

Burnout often stems from a lack of boundaries—overgiving, overworking, and putting others' needs above your own. I learned to say no without guilt. To protect time, energy, and space for recovery. To lead without self-abandonment.

Boundaries didn’t make me less successful—they made me more effective. They allowed me to show up fully, not fractured.

Mental Fitness: Training the Mind Like a Muscle

Mental fitness became my anchor. I began daily practices that built resilience, clarity, and self-awareness—tools I now share with clients. These habits weren’t about fixing myself; they were about sustaining myself.

Positive intelligence. Visualization. Gratitude. Recovery breaks. These became non-negotiables—not indulgences.

Coaching: The Space Where it All Came Together

Coaching was the mirror I needed. It challenged me, held me accountable, and reminded me of who I was beyond the roles and results. It helped me rewrite my story—not as someone who kept starting over, but as someone who was refining a purpose-led path.

And slowly, I found something unexpected: joy.

Or, as the French say, that je ne sais quoi—the spark, the curiosity, the deep-in-your-bones knowing that you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.

Final Thoughts

Burnout is not a badge of honour. Redundancy doesn’t have to mean failure. And purpose isn’t found—it’s remembered.

Today, I help leaders and teams navigate these same waters. Not by avoiding change or pressure, but by building the inner resilience to face them with courage and clarity.

If any of this resonates with you, you’re not alone. And you don’t have to wait for a breakdown to begin your breakthrough.

What’s helped you navigate burnout or career reinvention—and what’s still missing?
I’d love to hear your story. If you’re curious about how purpose, boundaries, or mental fitness could support your own journey, let’s connect.
