Workplace Learning – Formal or Informal?

Workplace Learning – Formal or Informal?

What is formal and informal learning?

Formal learning is defined as learning that is "delivered in a structured organized method." It is usually prepared and overseen by an instructor and occurs in a physical setting or online using a learning management system (LMS). Think about formal training for new hire onboarding or workplace compliance training, for instance. These types of training need to be organized, have deadlines, and have a specific goal.

The informal education sector occupies the opposite end of the spectrum. It occurs outside of a conventional learning context, is unstructured, and is frequently unintended. Importantly, it lacks obvious goals and is spontaneous, asynchronous, and self-directed. It might happen at any time, anywhere in your business.

For instance, a coworker may mention to you in passing that she has come upon a more workable method for automating a manual process that you may also use. Even though it wasn't deliberate, you still learned something.

Formal or Informal Learning? Which one to choose?

It can be difficult to decide between formal and informal learning methods. For instance, official training is frequently provided online in the areas of law, health, safety, and security. On the other hand, online instruction in software, product expertise, or customer service may not be official.

But this is just the start of a flawed strategy. Sometimes the dullest subjects require the most inventive approaches to be taken. What should therefore be included in your next e-learning course? Consider the five issues listed below:

10 Easy Strategies for Organizational Transformation

  • What formal training materials should I cover, like text, video, audio, or graphics?
  • Where can I add a social part to the content? What social media sites do online students use often, and how can you get them to join?
  • Is there a way to enhance the online training experience by adding non-formal games or simulations?
  • Is one method better for some topics or tasks than another?
  • Is it possible to use microlearning as part of this course?
  • Formal and informal
