Summary

You can't lead well, if you aren't well, mentally, physically and emotionally. And I should know! After 23 years as an English teacher, 10 as AHT and DHT, I suffered a burnout. Whilst working full time in these demanding roles, I'd also brought up two boys. When I ended up working with a head who didn't share my values, and going through a divorce at the same time, everything became too much. I was overwhelmed and emotionally drained. My ambition had always been to be a headteacher but I knew at that point it wasn't possible, that I needed to take a step back. In all of my leadership roles, I loved working with staff and I always tried to use a coaching approach. I learned about coaching many years ago; the philosophy really resonated with me and I tried to apply it to the way I worked with staff and students. I decided that I needed to learn more, so got myself a coach and booked myself onto a coach training course. When I experienced coaching it helped me to truly understand how powerful it can be. It totally changed my life. I decided that I wanted to help teachers and school leaders not end up at the point of burnout that I had. So I set up We Lead Well to support teachers and school leaders through coaching. I also created a podcast on which I interview prominent educationalists and school leaders about leadership and wellbeing.

Now I work with teachers, school leaders, schools, multi-academy trusts and other businesses by coaching individuals, groups and teams and supporting schools and businesses to develop coaching communities.

I truly believe that building positive relationships is at the heart of effective leadership. We must remember that the people in our organisations are humans first. The best leaders build relationships based on honesty, compassion, mutual respect and trust. Cultures are transformed when leaders have the courage to engage in open and honest conversations so that their teams feel trusted, valued, respected and empowered to take control of their own workload and be autonomous in what they do.

Coaching can help you to transform your school or business culture, to create a thinking environment in which staff readily engage in their professional development and outcomes improve as a result
