Waste services provider Silverdell has standardised its IT infrastructure, moving to a private cloud with desktop and application virtualisation.
The company, which has around 800 employees across 25 different offices in the UK, has been running three disparate Microsoft IT infrastructures after acquiring rivals Kitsons and Redhills in recent years

It has now outsourced its IT to managed services provider IT Managed Services (ITMS), which is merging the three infrastructures into one Microsoft infrastructure running on standardised Dell hardware.

ITMS operates the private cloud that hosts Silverdell’s core IT services in a data centre in the North West of England. Its applications, such as Microsoft Office and a number of different accounting systems, and approximately 350 desktops were virtualised with 2X Software.
John Abrahams, technical director at IT Managed Services, said: “We considered Citrix and Microsoft desktop virtualisation routes too, but 2X offered by far the best price-performance ratio. It’s simple but highly robust for publishing remotely-hosted applications to virtual Silverdell desktops, allowing the company to operate as one and overcome the need for expensive IT management costs.”
Ian Johnson, CFO of Silverdell, said that the new infrastructure is also more resilient than the previous system.
“People are doing things now in 10 minutes what they would spend hours doing previously [due to downtime],” he said.
