Bookkeeping is not admin
It is the thing everything else depends on
That is easy to forget when it feels like the most boring job on the list
Here is what most business owners do not realise until it costs them:
- Late or messy bookkeeping does not just mean a scramble at year end
- It means decisions made on numbers that are already out of date
- Cash flow that looks fine until it suddenly is not
- A tax bill that is a surprise instead of something you saw coming
A few things that catch people out:
"I will catch up at the weekend" becomes three months of receipts in a shoebox
Numbers that are a month old are not numbers you can actually make decisions with
Reconciling once a quarter means finding errors three months after they happened
The business owner doing their own books is usually the most expensive person in the building to be doing it
Bookkeeping done properly means you always know where you stand, so nothing is ever a surprise
Bookkeeping done badly looks like: Cash flow shocks, tax bill nobody planned for and decisions made on guesswork
Genuine question for other business owners here - how often do you actually look at your numbers? Monthly? Only at year end? Never until your accountant chases you?
