• End of 2024. Ordinary Monday, beginning of December. Employed work situation changes swiftly.

In the space of a month and a half, I went from thinking I’d be working in a very comfortable industry for as long as possible in my fifties to ‘Oh, well - it’ll be exciting to have your own business’.

I did do a very, very brief bit of imagining myself slotting into another mid-level, corporate leadership role with all of the comforts that entails, and then the screen went blank. I literally could not imagine it.

I was fortunate to be able to think about it from all angles. After all, I suddenly had a lot of time and contrary to popular belief, just because I COULD go to the gym every day. I didn’t.

I had to think about what I really wanted for the first time. It was tough at first. I didn’t have a clue what I wanted. Never had the time or reason to think that deeply, if I’m honest.

I had to give myself permission to NOT want to go back to a guaranteed salary, benefits, structure and safety.

My clients are exactly where I was. Good job. Good money. Everyone telling them how brilliantly they're doing.

And underneath it, that low-to-medium vibration that something's just not right, and posh holidays and keeping Amazon in business (ok, this was me!) only assuage the niggle for tiny moments.

There doesn’t need to be a dramatic event for you to allow yourself time to think about yourself and what you might want to do with a bit or all of your life. Just set aside the time and keep the appointment.

This decision-making, 'can I?' business doesn't stop when you close your laptop. I write about it twice a week if you fancy company. https://katedoddcoaching.kit.com/emails
