When a team is stretched, recruitment can quickly feel urgent.
There is pressure to write the advert, publish it and start interviewing as soon as possible.
But before doing that, it is important to understand what the business actually needs.
What problem should this person solve? What will they be responsible for? Which skills are essential and what could be developed with the right support?
You may also need to consider whether recruitment is the right solution. If responsibilities are unclear, work is poorly distributed or managers are already struggling to delegate, adding another person may not relieve the pressure in the way you expect.
Taking time to define the role gives you a stronger basis for the job description, advert and selection process. It also helps the successful candidate understand what will be expected of them
