28 April is International Workers' Memorial Day
Organisations around the world are today remembering the millions of workers who died whilst doing their job. Established in 1970, the global initiative aims to promote safety whilst remembering the victims.This year’s chosen theme is “good health and safety for all workers whoever they are”, and the need to address inequality at work. Workers’ Memorial Day is officially recognised by the UK government, and is also chosen by the United Nations’ International Labour Organization (ILO), as World Day for Safety and Health at Work. According to the ILO, a worker dies from a work-related accident or disease every 15 seconds, and 6300 people die as a result of occupational accidents or work-related diseases every day – amounting to over 2.3 million deaths a year.
