Who knows your company’s firewall password? Is it the same as the server password? Laptop login? Banking login …..need I go on?
Recent stories such as The Office retail chain breach of data security highlight the danger of little or no process around data security for any size of business.
It is frighteningly easy to breach many a company’s security perimeter because basically they haven’t got one. They may have some kind of firewall but it isn’t locked down or managed properly. There is no management of employees mobile devices on networks so data is freely available .If there is a guest network , access is given to devices that should not be allowed because the password is on a post it note above the photocopier or shouted up the office to anyone who wants it. Just as scary is the fact that no one even considers this an issue.
Once you understand the importance of having a security perimeter that is more like a fortress you should understand what it is you need to protect and what compliance regulations you may be breaching, albeit unwittingly.
Ask yourself this :
How long are you legally obliged to keep copies of customer data for?
Do you archive email for audit purposes to comply with your industries regulations? Should you?
For how many days does your backup retain copies of your data ?
Where are your backup’s held? How fast could your business be up and running from those backup’s if needed ?
Have you ever tried to recover your data to test you can actually use it in the event of an incident?
Do you feel reassured or unsure now?
