Think positive! That's what we're meant to do isn't it?
But why?
Henry Ford is quoted as saying “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you're right.”
A few years ago I was driving in Corsica and saw a piece of metal in the road. The obvious thing to do was to drive around it, so I said to myself "Do not drive over that!" Less than a second later, I drove over the piece of metal, destroyed the tyre and spent more than a day hunting for a single tyre to replace the ruined one. I always wondered why I hit the metal.
On the road from home to church, there is a pothole that I regularly have to negotiate. When I think "Do not hit the hole", I hit it but when I think "Miss the hole", I miss it.
It appears that my brain doesn't hear the "not" and processes the positive outcome therefore I hit the pothole or destroy a tyre.
I am training myself to tell myself positive positive ideas and not negative positive ideas that my brain won't process correctly.
So now when I walk into a meeting I tell myself that this is going to be successful rather than I will not fail.
When I speak to someone about a difficult subject I tell myself that I will bring understanding rather than not bring confusion.
Call to action - Reframe your internal thoughts to eliminate the negative and place your outcomes in the positive.
