Much emphasis has been placed in the creation of SMART objectives for a company. Although I agree with Specific, Measurable and Time bound, I take issue with Actual and Realistic as these can lead a company to settle for the unintentional option of mediocrity.

Better is to go for BHAGs – Big, Hairy, Audicious Goals, that sets a company apart from their competitors.

The creation of BHAGs set Boeing apart from Douglas breaking the perception of Boeing only being a military aircraft provider, in 1924 turned the Computing Tabulating Recording Company into IBM Corporation, made Sony the technological giant in the 1980s, catapulted Ford to be the vehicle of choice in the emerging automobile industry and is the inspiration for global brand leaders like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and the late Steve Jobs.

The constant setting of BHAGs creates success for the future.

As a Non-Executive Director, I seek to be the part of the oil between the management board and the wider company, their customer base and their suppliers.
