Each of us believes in something or someone. For instance, like Buddhists believe in their moral messiah Buddha, so Christians believe in their own messiah – Jesus Christ. However, no one knows till now whether this man really existed or not. Who was Jesus Christ? Did a historical Jesus really exist? What was his life and was it actually like the one we were told about? What is the role of The Sermon on the Mount in Jesus’s life and in the life of the whole mankind?
The curious and at the same time amazing thing is that a religious believer would never ask himself a question whether Jesus Christ existed. The truth is that the faith of every believer is so strongly driven that it does not need any evidence. However, people need to face the reality that the evidence of Jesus existence as a historical personality has no justification. The only knowledge we have about Jesus Christ as a real person is gained from the books that were written not by philosophers, but simple people. Moreover, there is no evidence that once in the Roman Empire Pontius Pilate executed someone named Jesus or at least someone described like the Jesus Christ we believe in. So, actually, everything mentioned above just confirms once again that the man, like the one people strongly believe in, simply did not exist. However, where do all these images of the holy man with a beard and long hair come from? Indeed, many of the writings about Jesus Christ are just some false interpretations or fraud texts. The documents that actually can be defined as evidences are called gospels or gospel manuscripts. Their authors can be considered as the followers of Jesus Christ. Later, the Church named these men as Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John and called them apostles of the Christ. However, can people believe these gospels? All the gospels are written as narrative stories, while everyone must consider the fact that if a person has actually seen Jesus, he or she could have written it from the first person singular. As it appears, the talks around the question whether Jesus Christ really existed or not still stays open just like the question around the existence of Homer and Shakespeare.
Apart from the talks around Jesus’s personality, there is also a common talk among religious scholars and believers about his Sermon on the Mount. This certain collection of teachings is the first example of pure ethics and the main collection of Jesus Christ’s teachings in The New Testament. Throughout the whole Jewish wisdom literature, one can feel and read the power of the God’s word. According to the Torah, or Jewish Law, it was expected of Jesus, or the Messiah, to alter the main Law. The way Jesus Christ has changed Torah or the main Law laid in his advice exactly from The Sermon on the Mount. He advised Jews on how to live peacefully under the Roman rule and respect Romans. Moreover, Jesus advised Jews to follow their God and instead of making sacrifices to the altar, it would be better to be reconciled to a brother or even an enemy. The wisdom of Jesus in The Sermon on the Mount is like something unwarranted. The Sermon on the Mount is the representation or, in other words, the first seed of the Christian morality that has survived through many centuries. Moreover, this collection of teachings still remains after many centuries as the main religious and moral inspiration for many Christians. For instance, if to take into focus the excerpt about love towards each other, and even enemies, the whole text can be interpreted differently. In The Sermon on the Mount, Jesus was speaking about specific commandments of the Law. However, exactly in the excerpt about love towards each other, he went away from the doctrines of the Law. The main thesis of Jesus’s teachings is that one should not hate enemies, but, otherwise, love them. According to Jesus’s words, when one loves enemies, it makes one God-like or God-blessed. Love to enemies is explained through our sins. For instance, all people have sins and become like enemies to God, but God forgives us; that is why we need to love and forgive our enemies, too. Only through love to everyone and each other, people will be able to touch the heaven. According to Jesus and his teaching, everyone needs to greet his or her enemies, smile to them and nod to them. Regarding the tax collectors that are also mentioned in the teaching, these people were despised in Israel at those times. However, even they deserve to be loved and not punished. According to Jesus, we should not lay our lives only for our brothers, but also for strangers, for enemies, even for these tax collectors. The main source where The Sermon on the Mount was mentioned was the Gospel of Matthew and also the Gospel of Luke. According to the Gospel of Matthew, The Sermon on the Mount was presented on the hills near Capernaum.
All we can say about Jesus Christ is that if to think about him as a historical figure, whose Sermon on the Mount shows people how to lead a good life full of kindness and forgiveness while Jesus himself was living life without many friends or home, and thinking about him as a saint man, the son of God, one can imagine and feel that holy wisdom, love, struggle, and blessing. One may ask if it is any easier to follow Jesus’s teachings today. The answer would be positive. The society today is not only out of any morality or even some life values, but also has drawn in sins and hatred.
