What you said as a leader vs what your actions show.I'll bet you'll spot a mistake you made too.
➡︎ You said: “You can always come to me.”
⚠️Your actions show: “But only if it’s not uncomfortable.”
➡︎ You said: “We’re a family here.”
⚠️Your actions show: “So, we will brush your concerns under the carpet, families should always get along".
➡︎ You said: “Your feedback is valuable.”
⚠️Your actions show: “Unless it challenges our structure or senior team.”
➡︎ You said: “You’re one of our top performers.”
⚠️Your actions show: “So we’ll give you more to carry when others fail.”
These lines sound harmless.
Some even sound inspiring.
But in the HR case files I read-
in the exit interviews I conduct-
in the grievance investigations I lead...
it’s these very sentences that appear again and again.
Not because they’re outright unlawful.
But because they spark unlawful patterns.
And that's when the inconsistent, unfair and discriminatory behaviours start.
Discrimination isn’t always about slurs or policies.
Sometimes it’s a pattern of;↳ selective listening
↳ inconsistent application
↳ or hidden power dynamics.
And that’s why you should work with a HR consultant who
asks the right questions,
thinks outside of the box,
and applies the legislation gap analysis that you'd never think or know to apply.
HR isn't just about documentation.
And leadership isn't just about motivation.
