Are you fishing in the wrong pond?

I’m just going to put it out there

  1. If you struggle to recruit/retain staff, you are fishing in the wrong pond.
  2. If your results are out of sync with your effort, you’re fishing in the wrong pond.
  3. If you read 9 CVs and interview one, you’re fishing in the wrong pond.

STOP WASTING YOUR PRECIOUS TIME FISHING IN THE WRONG POND!

The old idea that recruitment is a numbers game , is outdated and defunct. I seriously challenge anyone that lays claim to its productivity or long-term success. Competition for quality candidates has always been stiff but in today’s market it is even more challenging and therefore imperative 1. you know what you want and 2. Know where to find it or know someone that does.

If you haven’t seen The Pursuit of Happyness (its not a spelling error, its how its spelt) I strongly recommend it – here is the cold calling clip

WORK SMART, NOT HARD

Could you be fishing in the wrong pond? If you think this is a possibility, here’s what I suggest

  1. Know what your fish look like – and where they swim

Fish where the right kind are biting and you’re likely to catch something.  If you are having a hard time recruiting/retaining staff in key positions look at your hiring practices - time to visit a new pond. Put yourself in their shoes – if you were looking for that job where would you look?

  1. Take the advice of a seaoned professional and act on it.

They know more than you, they’ve been doing it a lot longer. Let them guide you and tell you what fishes swim where, when they bite, what bait to use etc.

  1. Once at the new pond, choose the best bait

You are not the only one fishing in the pond. Offer what the fish want/need. If what you’re offering is watered down or substandard you will lose to the competition and you deserve to. Stand out in the crowd. Focus on your USP’s and offerings. Enough with the fish analogy – you know your business, make what you’re offering worthwhile for the candidate to consider you (yes I did just say that – now more than ever it is a candidate driven market – that’s another post for another day).

4) Network strategically and choose your recruitment partner wisely.
Quite simply, what is the value of your network? Can you pick up the phone, send an email or message when you have a question? If the right people know about you and your business in a sincere manner, the easier it is when the time comes to recruit.

If you’re still reading this and want to know where the best ponds are for your needs, don’t be like Terry Malloy in On the Waterfront, who said, “You don't understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody…” – get in touch and find out what ponds suits your needs.
