Summary

Essential skills unlock learning in the classroom, boosting academic outcomes, perseverance and self belief. They halve the likelihood of being out of work, and increase earnings across a lifetime. They even boost wellbeing and life satisfaction.

But access to these skills isn’t fair. And where they are missed, it undermines social mobility, productivity and wellbeing.

We think everyone, at every stage of their lives, should have the opportunities to build them.

We focus on the development of eight essential skills, as defined in the Universal Framework. The Framework breaks each of the essential skills down into a sequence of steps, taking individuals from being an absolute beginner through to mastery. It takes soft skills and puts rigour behind them.

The Skills Builder Employer Programme drives improvements within employers' businesses by using the Skills Builder Framework and approach.

Work with us to identify areas of the organisation where there are opportunities to enhance your existing activities or provide new routes for essential skills development. Together, we will then create and implement a strategy for achieving your goals.

Focus areas might include recruitment processes, staff learning and development, outreach provision or a combination of all three:

Recruitment - Hire the right person for the right role: Ensure transparency throughout your hiring process and level the playing field by using the clear and consistent language of the Skills Builder Framework across your recruitment cycle.

Staff development - Build a skilled and inclusive workforce: Identify essential skills strengths and gaps in your workforce and provide individuals at all levels of the business and provide opportunities to build these skills at each stage of their professional journey.

Outreach - Ensure essential skills for all: Provide meaningful opportunities for young people and those outside the labour market to develop the skills to succeed through outreach activities equipping the workforce of tomorrow with essential skills.
