Summary

Having spent several years working in the industry as an engineer and environmental scientist, I set up Fellows Environmental, a Manchester-based consultancy specialising in waste, energy and resource management.

We get involved during the very early stages of a project to provide technical expertise and support for the: development of long-term strategy, identification of operational cost reductions, and forecasting of potential project feasibility amongst other roles. We work with a range of clients from large multi-nationals such as BP and Tesco to small, local waste management companies. We offer support with planning permissions, environmental permits and environmental management systems as well as providing technical expertise and project management capabilities to guide clients through the complexities of waste management to ensure that any developments are legally compliant.

Experience

  • Fellows Environmental

    Director
    2010 - Current
    Fellows Environmental
Since starting Fellows Environmental, I have worked in a number of rolls with a variety of public and private clients from the waste, energy and resource sectors. These rolls have included project management, site master-planning, developing management strategy, providing technical advice, undertaking project feasibility studies, minimising industrial operational costs, providing training courses and much more, typically starting during the very early stages of a project. I helped manage the development of a long-term business plan for EnviroEnergy related to the largest district heating network in the UK. This work was built on a bespoke predictive financial model we constructed for the organisation looking at all the technical and financial aspects of their operations and what impact they had on the overall profitability of the operations. Fellows provided support to SAICA Paper UK during the commissioning stage of its new paper recycling facility in Manchester to develop the environmental management systems used on site for the paper mill, AD facility and incinerator. This work included developing and leading a series of training courses for operational and management staff related to on-site environmental issues and practices which were set up to help the facility operate within its environmental permit conditions. We developed a predictive tool for BP to predict the waste arisings during the construction of oil and gas pipelines from Azerbaijan to Georgia and Turkey and we have also developed predictive models and tools to: investigate the feasibility of MRF developments, mark tender submissions, forecast energy balances and develop waste flow models. I have acted as technical advisor in several roles, providing project advice to Banks Developments and Scotwaste continuing the development of a 30 acre Green Energy Park, and aiding Blackburn with Darwen Council on their waste procurement project (ISOS) and have on-going ties with several other Local Authorities.
  • Wardell Armstrong LLP

    Senior Environmental Scientist
    2007 - 2010
I worked as project manager of planning and environmental impact assessment works for waste disposal, material recycling and energy from waste facilities. This included technical design of waste from energy facilities and specific component design. I also developed waste strategies to improve recycling, reduce carbon emissions and promote local energy distribution and advised on the short, medium and long term considerations with relation to planning, EIA and other project development issues. In addition I produced Advanced WRATE, waste flow and financial models for both feasibility and operation of large and small scale waste to energy plants, waste disposal facilities and entire waste collection and disposal schemes.
  • Encia Environmental

    Resident Engineer
    2004 - 2007
Initially working as a CQA engineer working on numerous landfill sites, I oversaw cell construction, lining, capping and road construction before moving on as resident engineer at a clay quarry being converted to a landfill site. I project managed installation of all utilities, infrastructure, ground remediation works, drainage design and material movements as well as acting as a design engineer for the WRG NW contract being responsible for production of designs, specification, design risk assessment and pre construction health and safety plans for projects including cell and road construction, capping works, drainage design and site investigation plans.
  • Robert Long Consultancy

    CQA Engineer
    2004 - 2004
