Many people have small skin lesions that bother them. They may catch on clothing, feel uncomfortable, affect confidence, or simply be something they would prefer not to live with. Common examples include warts, verrucae, skin tags and some harmless raised or rough skin lesions. At Prima Medica, cryotherapy offers a quick, precise and minimally invasive treatment option for suitable benign lesions.
Cryotherapy means “cold treatment”. It works by applying a controlled freeze to the targeted skin lesion. This damages the unwanted tissue, allowing the body to naturally break it down and repair the area over time. Modern precision devices such as CryoPen allow treatment to be directed at the lesion itself, helping to minimise impact on the surrounding healthy skin.
CryoPen is particularly useful because of its pinpoint accuracy. The device does not need to touch the skin and can treat small, specific areas with a fine, controlled application. This makes it suitable for many small lesions where precision matters. Treatment is usually quick, with some small lesions taking only seconds to treat. Depending on the size, depth, location and type of lesion, more than one treatment may be needed.
Cryotherapy may be suitable for a range of common benign skin lesions, including warts, verrucae, skin tags, seborrhoeic keratoses, molluscum contagiosum and selected areas of superficial sun damage where clinically appropriate. For feet, cryotherapy can be helpful for stubborn verrucae, which can be uncomfortable when walking and frustrating when they do not settle with over-the-counter treatments. It can also be used for small skin tags that catch on jewellery or clothing, or raised benign lesions that are repeatedly irritated.
One of the strengths of having treatment with Prima Medica is that every lesion is assessed before treatment. As an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner, I bring clinical assessment skills and a safety-focused approach to skin and lesion review. This means that if a lesion has features that may need further medical assessment — such as rapid change, bleeding, irregular colour, unusual pigmentation, pain, ulceration, or an uncertain appearance — I will not simply treat it cosmetically. Instead, I can recognise when something does not look right and advise appropriate onward review or referral through the correct healthcare pathway. This provides reassurance that treatment is not only about removal, but about making sure the lesion is suitable and safe to treat.
Patients often choose cryotherapy because it is fast, targeted and generally well tolerated. The treatment is designed to focus on the lesion rather than the surrounding healthy skin. It is also a clean treatment option, as the CryoPen does not need messy cotton buds, cones or contact applicators. After treatment, the area may become red, tender, blistered, scabbed or darker before healing. This is a normal part of the skin’s response, and clear aftercare advice is provided so patients know what to expect.
For warts and verrucae, especially on the feet, cryotherapy may be particularly appealing before holidays, sandal season, swimming or increased summer activity. Verrucae can be persistent and sometimes embarrassing, especially around pools, changing rooms and open footwear. Treating them early gives the skin time to respond and heal.
Prima Medica offers a calm, professional and caring approach. My aim is not simply to remove a lesion, but to ensure that treatment is appropriate, explained clearly and carried out with care. Clinical assessment, safety and patient reassurance sit at the centre of every consultation.
If you have a wart, verruca, skin tag or other small skin lesion that is troubling you, Prima Medica can assess whether cryotherapy may be suitable.
