SMART vs. BHAGs

SMART vs. BHAGs

In the business world that I inhabit, much is spoken about SMART goals.

 Just in case these have passed you by the word smart is an acronym for the following five concepts;

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Realistic and
  • Time bound.

 Now I have no problem with specific, measurable and time bound, but more and more I'm asking myself the question as to whether striving for a achievable and realistic is leading us into life of mediocrity.

I know this goes against many on the management gurus who say that without achievable and realistic goals then nothing is possible because "if you don't know where your going, how will you know when you've got there?"

So far so good, but when we start to set these goals the temptation is to set them low enough such that we know that we can reach them.

I am challenging myself and I would challenge you also to consider moving away from achievable and realistic into the scary world of BHAGs.

Big Hairy Audacious Goals!

A company I worked for had a BHAG that they would be twice as large that's the nearest competitor in any market and that they were active in. Everyone in the company knew this, and we all work towards achieving this. They were successful.

When Barack Obama & Donald Trump embarked on their runs to the Whitehouse, these were BHAGs as they challenged the accepted norm of who could be elected President of the United States of America. Both were successful because they spread the vision that their BHAG was worth fighting and voting for.

I am setting my BHAGs to so audacious that I am pushing myself out of the normality of life into the place of non-security. Who's with me?
